‘Fresh Off The Boat’ Creator Nahnatchka Khan Signs First-Look Deal With Netflix | Film News
Fresh Off The Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan has signed a first-look deal with Netflix. It’s a multi-year deal that, despite her success in TV, is exclusively for feature films. Khan has already worked with Netflix before on the well liked romcom Always Be My Maybe.
Netflix doesn’t normally disclose viewing figures, but they revealed that 32 million households watched the film in the first four weeks. Thus it’s no surprise that the streaming giant would like more, similar films from Khan.
Prior to that, Khan created sitcom Fresh Off The Boat, which is currently in its sixth season, and also created Don’t Trust The Bitch In Apartment 23, which aired for two seasons and has gained a bit of a cult following since. The Netflix deal is exclusively for film because Khan recently signed a four-year deal with Universal to create, develop, write, supervise and produce series projects.
“Nahnatchka is a whip smart, funny, talented filmmaker. She has an incredible eye for storytelling and bringing to light new talent and ideas. We’re thrilled to be the home to more of her films”, said Scott Stuber, head of Netflix Film. Khan herself added:
“I had such an amazing experience working with Scott, Racheline and the entire team at Netflix – not only are they dedicated to making quality comedy, but also to supporting different voices and perspectives. Plus my dad just got Netflix so he could watch my movie and he’s expecting more content from me”.
This is the latest first-look deal a talented creator has signed with Netflix. Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, Patty Jenkins, Game Of Thrones showruners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and The Haunting of Hill House‘s Mike Flanagan are just a few huge names that also have deals with the streaming giant.
So Khan is in good company. We should all look forward to more fun, clever films from her in the future.
