Game of Thrones has gained a cult following in the years since it has come to our screens, bringing with it unparalleled popularity to premium network HBO. But whilst its introduction on the channel stood for the highest quality of TV, as the show is entering its sixth series, its gone from being the standard bearer for quality, to perhaps a facade to a creative decline – as seen by the recent raft of disasters befalling their upcoming projects.

The New York magazine’s Vulture blog has run a piece raising this concern, commenting: “[HBO] hasn’t come up with an undeniable drama hit since [Game of Thrones] bowed in 2011”. Hollywood Reporter television critic Daniel Fienberg added to that sense by commenting: “Game of Thrones is HBO’s standard-bearer and the rest of the troops are marching miles and miles
behind
”.
