HBO’s Game of Thrones is likely to continue, despite the network’s programming president Michael Lombardo‘s promises, until we are all as old and balding as Grand Maester Pycelle. The show draws in huge audiences, wins record breaking amounts of awards, and causes endless buzz amongst internet communities.

It also has one of the fantasy genre’s most intricate and absorbing internal mythologies, and a wealth of material yet to see the screen. Today, the Daily Star on Sunday is reporting that George R. R. Martin let slip some intriguing details about a Game of Thrones movie currently in the works. It must be noted here that the Daily Star is a sensationalist rag that mostly covers celebrity nip slips when it isn’t furthering its conservative agenda, so all that follows must be taken with a certain amount of skepticism.

During a HBO party that took place after this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Martin is reported to have made an announcement about the future project. The Daily Star on Sunday’s source has the American fantasy author state: “There will be a movie but I am not involved. I have too much to do. That is something HBO and the DB Weiss and David Beioff are dealing with. I have two more books to finish and I still have so much to do“. This all makes sense as the show has already departed drastically from Martin‘s novels. HBO has also met reasonable success with taking two of its other shows, Sex and the City and Entourage, to the big screen.

The source also claimed: “They are looking at dipping back in time during certain periods of the series, which could be examined as a one off plot. That means that some of the big characters who fans have seen die on screen could be resurrected such as Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, Oberyn Martell The Red Viper – and Ned Stark“. While it is possible to see HBO continuing their popular series as a film, it seems unlikely they would return to previous points in the shows narrative.

The idea that they would cover additional material from the Game of Thrones universe, such as the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas featuring characters mentioned but never seen in the show, seems much more plausible. Martin himself even mentioned this possibility in an interview with IGN. Whatever the truth behind this latest set of Game of Thrones rumours, it is interesting to consider how the show would translate to a cinematic feature, and what will happen when this incredible story comes to a close.
