Gina Rodriguez To Star In ‘Last Known Position’ Series Adaptation At Amazon

Gina Rodriguez has signed on to star in the series adaptation of thriller podcast Last Known Position at Amazon. Rodriguez is no stranger to the material, having voiced the lead role in the podcast, and she will also serve as executive producer for the series.

Last Known Position revolves around a luxury state-of-the-art American commercial jetliner that has mysteriously disappeared on its maiden voyage somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. A team of experts, including submersible pilot Mikaela Soto, are tasked with locating the plane by grieving billionaire William Cavanaugh.

Cavanaugh offers to fund the rescue mission in hopes of recovering the plane that carried his wife and daughter. Soon the crew of experts comes to the realization that Cavanaugh hasn’t been entirely honest with them, and that what brought the jetliner down may be something way out of their pay grade.

But not only does the crew have to deal with a possible saboteur among them, there also might be something unknown lurking in the depths of the sea.

The podcast comes from QCode, a podcast network and audio production studio that creates fresh and cinematic narratives for a new approach to storytelling. They also delivered fans apocalyptic thriller Blackout starring Rami Malek and sci-fi horror series The Left Right Game starring Tessa Thompson.

Last Known Position was created by Luke Passmore and directed by John Wynn, and first premiered in December of 2021. Passmore is partnering with Amazon to adapt the show into a script while also serving as executive producer.

The podcast-to-series pipeline is a new phenomenon, but likely one that will only pick up steam. Amazon previously had success with adapting the psychological thriller podcast Homecoming into a series with Julia Roberts, while The Black Tapes is getting a TV adaptation, as is true crime podcast Shit-Town, which is being developed by Spotlight director Tom McCarthy.

Rodriguez is best known for starring in Jane The Virgin, which ran for 100 episodes between 2014-2019. She currently stars in Disney+ series Diary Of A Future President, and is in post-production on Lost Ollie, a live-action/CGI hybrid series for Netflix. On the film side of things, she had a supporting role in romantic comedy I Want You Back – also for Amazon – earlier this year.

There’s no word on when Last Known Position is expected to begin filming, but it has an exciting premise that arguably will work better on screen that it did in podcast form. Combine that with it already having a built-in fanbase, and it’s easy to see why Amazon is pursuing this series adaptation.
