‘Hidden Figures’ Wins Best Movie At BET Awards | Film News

Hidden Figures overcame hits Get Out and Fences to win Best Movie at the 2017 BET Awards. Hidden Figures managed to beat Oscar-winning film Moonlight, though Mahershala Ali retained his spot as Best Actor at last night’s awards ceremony.

Actress Taraji P. Henson also won Best Actress for her role in Hidden Figures last night. She stars alongside Janelle Monáe and Octavia Spencer, who were nominated for Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Oscars.

This year’s BET Awards – which strive to celebrate the achievements of African-Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment – was hosted by SNL‘s Leslie Jones and saw Beyonce win big, going home with five awards.

Hidden Figures has been celebrated for engaging an audience with an untold truth of the past. Based on the book by the same name, the film tells the story of a group of African American female mathematicians employed at NASA during the Space Race, and their battle with prejudice throughout their journey.

The film was still a surprise box office hit at its time of release, outrunning Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on its first weekend and earning a $22.8 million opening.
Hidden Figures is now available to buy or rent on Amazon.
