Idris Elba & John Cena To Star In Action Movie ‘Head Of State’ | Film News

Idris Elba and John Cena, already set to team up in James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad, are set to collaborate on another action movie. This one is titled Head Of State. Amazon have reportedly purchased the package after a Zoom presentation by screenwriter Harrison Query and producers Peter Safran and John Rickard. The deal is reportedly worth between high-six and low-seven figures.

Plot details are mostly under wraps, but Collider reports that Elba and Cena will play a mismatched odd couple in a 90s-style action movie, which finds them caught in a high-stakes, high-octane situation. Deadline also claims the pitch sounds like a mix of Air Force One and Hobbs & Shaw.

Safran’s involvement in the project makes sense, as he’s also a producer on The Suicide Squad as well as Cena’s related upcoming HBO Max series, Peacemaker. He was reportedly eager to find another project for Elba and Cena to work on together after witnessing their chemistry on set, which is probably a good sign for Gunn’s film.

Query was set to pitch the project to other studios and streaming services, but Amazon acted quick to secure the deal. Query is currently an up-and-coming screenwriter who’s also working on a project for Netflix titled My Wife & I Bought A Ranch, a horror movie based on a six-part Reddit short story.

This project obviously makes total sense for any studio or streaming service. Elba and Cena in an action movie is a pretty easy sell. And it will probably look even better once The Suicide Squad arrives. That film is currently scheduled for an August 6, 2021 release.
