Is A ‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 On The Table? | TV News

Having dominated the Emmys alongside The Handmaid’s Tale last night, Big Little Lies is likely at the top of HBO’s list of priorities in season renewals. Fans surely wouldn’t scorn at the idea, but the creative team might have a little trouble sourcing for the show, as the limited series is based on the standalone novel by Liane Moriarty who is yet to write a sequel.

The key word here is yet. After the show’s big win for Outstanding Limited Series, Moriarty commented on the subject of a second installment, “I’m thinking about it. It’s a beautiful possibility. That’s all I’ll say.” She doesn’t give much away, but there’s an iota of positivity in there that hints at a bright future.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that the showrunners go ahead on their own, something not at all disastrous as has been demonstrated by Game of Thrones which has outrun George R.R. Martin‘s novels. That said, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had much longer to get to know the characters, however, and to branch off from Moriarty’s vision at this point could turn out entirely different.

It seems HBO can be pretty convincing, so I suggest fans don’t fret too much (though if I’ve learned anything from those diseased Sense8 fans, it’s that fretting can actually get you some closure).

Stars and executive producers Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, also threw in their two cents; Witherspoon commented, “You already know we’re liars, you shouldn’t trust anything we say. We’re thinking about it, we’re talking about it, we’re discussing it, but nothing definitive yet.” Kidman added, “It would be fantastic if we could continue, but right now, we’re just savoring this moment because this is amazing.”

Kidman, of course, won an Emmy last night for lead role in the series, beating out Witherspoon for the gong. Laura Dern, meanwhile, won her first Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress, while Alexander Skarsgard won in the corresponding men’s category. Clearly a stellar group of actors, it’s no wonder the show also won Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series at the Creative Emmys the weekend prior.

The show’s director Jean-Marc Vallée was also commended for his work last night, while creatives Alix Friedberg, Risa Garcia and Patricia McLaughlin were awarded for supervising Outstanding Contemporary Costumes last week, as was Susan Jacobs for Outstanding Music Supervision.

Big Little Lies details the lives of a group of mothers who are united by the common experience and struggles of being a woman. Pushed to the limits in the face of male aggression, there’s a much darker lining to the lives of these women.
