Jaden Smith Cast In Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix Music Drama ‘The Get Down’ | TV News

 

Jaden Smith has reportedly joined the cast of Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down, a Netflix original drama series about the New York music scene in the 1970’s. Netflix has collaborated with Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby) who will direct the first two and last episodes and executive produce, Shawn Ryan (creator of The Shield) will also executive produce the eight part series.

 

The Get Down focuses on a group of South Bronx teens enmeshed within the emerging Punk, Hip Hop and disco scenes. Smith will play graffiti artist Marcus ‘Dizzee’ Kipling, and will be joined by new talent, Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Herizen Guardiola, Mamoudou Athie and Yahya Abdul-Mateen. Sons of Anarchy’s Jimmy Smits will also star.

 

Luhrmann discussed Jaden Smith’s casting in a recently released statement, “we as an audience have known Jaden since he was very young. Recently, Jaden has been seeking diverse and challenging roles and this is a testament to his passion to grow in the craft. We’re all very happy with the casting of Jaden in the role of ‘Dizzee’ Kipling“.

 

The series will be Luhrmann’s first venture into TV and it will be interesting to see what the creative and flamboyant director will do with the colourful music movements of the drama. The Get Down will premiere on Netflix next year, watch the brand new teaser below.
