It has been reported that The Deuce, a TV drama about the porn industry in New York starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, has been picked up by HBO after a successful pilot episode. Gyllenhaal is also acting as a producer for the show and Franco as an executive producer. The two are joined by writers David Simon and George Pelecanos, the men behind the incredibly popular show The Wire.

Set in the 1970s and 1980s, The Deuce explores the New York porn industry’s boom after the business is legalised through the eyes of twin gangsters, Vincent and Frankie Martino (both played by Franco) and a prostitute named Candy (Gyllenhaal) who finds fame and fortune in the voyeuristic medium.

Although there is no release date yet attached to the project, its status is listed as post-production, so we can expect to learn more soon. Beside Franco and Gyllenhaal, The Deuce also stars Gary Carr, Margarita Levieva, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Emily Meade and Dominique Fishback.
