Just a few months ago, HBO announced a miniseries remake of Ingmar Bergman‘s classic domestic drama, Scenes From A Marriage. Oscar Isaac and Michelle Williams were on board to star, but now only half of that is true. Williams has had to drop out of the project due to scheduling reasons, and she’s been replaced by an equally great actor in Jessica Chastain.
This will re-team Chastain and Isaac, who worked together on 2014’s A Most Violent Year. Hagai Levi (The Affair) will write and direct the project, which will focus on many of the same themes the classic Bergman film tackled and remain an all-encompassing look at a fracturing relationship with no shying away from the minutest and most agonising of details.
It’s not entirely clear what specific scheduling issues forced Williams to drop out, but Chastain is a more than adequate replacement. The miniseries will likely always live in the shadow of Bergman’s film – it’s hard not to when making a remake of a cinematic classic – but Isaac and Chastain’s acting talent should be enough to make it stand out on its own.
Isaac has plenty of other fascinating projects lined up, including Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune, Paul Schrader‘s The Card Counter and a collaboration with Jake Gyllenhaal on Francis & The Godfather.
Chastain just released action-thriller Ava, and has globe-trotting spy adventure The 355 arriving in January. She also has The Eyes Of Tammy Faye and John Michael McDonagh‘s The Forgiven in the works.
