John Carney Attached To Film About Russ Meyer/Roger Ebert Partnership | Film News

Russ Meyer Roger Ebert

The director of Once and Begin Again, John Carney, may find himself trading films about struggling musicians for one about the partnership of filmmaker Russ Meyer and film critic Roger Ebert. According to Deadline, Carney is considering the project as a replacement for Michael Winterbottom, who has left the project on the grounds of ‘creative differences’.

Under Winterbottom’s leadership the untitled project worked off a script by Christopher Cluess, which focused on Ebert and Meyer’s collaboration on cult classic Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls. Meyer would later consider this his masterpiece. Ebert once described the film as “a camp sexploitation horror musical that ends in quadruple ritual murder and a triple wedding“. Spoiler Alert.

Despite showing interest, Carney remains in talks. Currently, the picture is due to star Will Ferrell as Russ Meyer and Josh Gad as Roger Ebert. Carney’s latest film, Sing Street will be out May 20.
