Kate Miner & Jason Canela To Star In Pandemic Horror Film ‘Stay Safe’

Kate Miner (Shameless) and Jason Canela (The Rookie) have signed on to star in Stay Safe, a pandemic-based horror film which follows a couple as they struggle with the ethical and potentially life-threatening implications of inviting a stranger into their home.

Written by David Gregg, Gia Neri and Rolando Vinas, the film revolves around Army Surgeon Eva Shepherd, who’s stationed on the front lines of what is now known as a Pandemic Hotzone. During an evening in with her boyfriend Patricio, Eva is preoccupied with a subliminal message she received from one of her patients when the couple hears a woman screaming for help.

The woman has escaped from the military police during a newly implemented curfew, and is begging the couple to be let into their home. Eva takes the mysterious stranger into her home, despite Patricio’s concerns. What will ensue next, and how it will tie in to the subliminal message Eva received earlier, is unknown.

Carlos V. Gutierrez will direct the film, which is being backed by American Entertainment Investors, Synkronized Films, and Elipsis Capital.

This is not the only project using on the coronavirus pandemic for inspiration, and will certainly not be the last. Another similar film currently in the works is Rich Flu, which stars Rosamund Pike, Macauley Culkin, and Daniel Brühl, and revolves around a killer virus that has expensive taste when seeking its host.

Miner is best known for her TV work, having a key role in the US version of Shameless and appearing on popular shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. Canela is also currently best known for TV, starring in the Nathan Fillion series The Rookie. He’s also been seen in romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe.

We’ll see whether Stay Safe can accurately capture the fear and ethical quandaries the real pandemic did. Expect to see a flurry of pandemic-based films over the next few years, especially in the horror genre.
