In September, Lady Gaga released the music video for “Til It Happens To You” – an empowering but ultimately harrowing display of how rape and sexual assault can manifest amongst college students.

Published on US Magazine, Gaga details how her own experience stayed hidden for seven years and how the blame was shifted. “Because of the way that I dress, and the way that I’m provocative as a person, I thought that I had brought it on myself in some way”, the singer confessed – something many survivors believe, which society doesn’t always discourage.

Gaga also explained the mental and physical effects of rape: “When you re-experience it throughout the years after it, it can trigger patterns in your body of physical distress, so a lot of people suffer from not only mental and emotional pain, but also physical pain of being abused, raped, or traumatized in some type of way”. Many will be unaware of the serious repercussions of rape without experiencing it first-hand, so Gaga’s words may have paved the way for a more understanding point of view.
