‘Mockingjay’ Keeps ‘In The Heart Of The Sea’ At Shore For Weak Box Office Weekend | Film News

With The Force Awakens hype reaching fever pitch, and the already underwhelming performance of the final installment of The Hunger Games series beginning to drag its heels in its fourth week, everybody expected this weekend to be a bit of a dire one at the box office. But even Warner Bros. must be surprised that it’s big new release has failed to reach the number one spot.

In The Heart Of The Sea was never going to be a record breaker, but with a box office draw like Chris Hemsworth in the lead, re-teaming with legendary director Ron Howard for the first time since the relatively successful Rush, it should have been a sure thing to top Mockingjay – Part 2.

Alas, tepid reviews and an advertising campaign buried beneath the goliath Star Wars machine have led to a paltry $11million debut in the US, making the estimated $100million film another likely flop in a string of disappointments for Warner Bros. at this years box office.

Things should improve drastically for the studio with next years Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but 2015 will surely be a year for them to forget.
