Natalie Portman & Lupita Nyong’o To Star In Apple Series ‘Lady In The Lake’ | TV News

Apple have snagged another pair of Academy Award winners for a new show as they continue to build their roster of stars. Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’o have signed on to star in limited series Lady In The Lake for the nascent streaming platform.

Based on Laura Lippman‘s book, the story is set in 1960s Baltimore, where an unsolved murder pushes housewife and mother Maddie Schwartz to reinvent her life as an investigative journalist, setting her on a collision course with Cleo Sherwood, a hard-working woman juggling motherhood, multiple jobs and a passionate commitment to advancing Baltimore’s Black progressive agenda.

Alma Har’el (Honey Boy) will direct the series and write the pilot, and she’ll co-write the other episodes alongside Dre Ryan (The Man In The High Castle), and the pair will serve as co-creators.

Jean-Marc Vallée‘s company Crazyrose is one of the producers behind the show, which is probably an important point for Apple, as Crazyrose was also behind HBO hits Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects. Those are the exact kind of get-people-talking shows Apple are trying to create in order to make their mark in the streaming world, so Vallée’s involvement makes sense.

Lady In The Lake will mark Portman’s first lead role in a TV series, the first major TV role for Nyong’o, as well as the first small screen project for Har’el. Har’el’s Honey Boy was released by Amazon and was greeted with critical acclaim, so it’s interesting that Amazon weren’t keen to get on board her next project. Their loss is Apple’s gain.

Portman and Nyong’o aren’t actors that attach themselves to projects lightly, which makes Lady In The Lake a pretty big deal worth looking out for. They’re two of the best actors working today, and seeing them collaborate with one of the hot new directors on the scene should be a treat for audiences.

Apple continue to push their chips into the middle of the table in order to compete with streaming juggernauts like Netflix and Disney.

Other shows with big stars they have in the works include Brie Larson starring in science drama Lessons In Chemistry, Claire Danes in supernatural tale The Essex Serpent, Samuel L. Jackson in ethereal adventure The Last Days Of Ptolemy Grey, and Julia Roberts in mystery The Last Thing He Told Me.

Lady in The Lake has the chance to be the biggest hit of them all.

Nyong’o will next be seen alongside Jessica Chastain in spy thriller The 355, while Portman is currently filming Thor: Love And Thunder.
