With Elon Musk taking over the reigns at Twitter, top executives have reportedly been fired, including CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and legal chief Vijaya Gadde.
According to Bloomberg, Elon Musk will build up his credentials and take over as CEO of Twitter, following his decision to fire several top executives after completing his acquisition of the social media business late Thursday.
Of his acquisition, Mr. Musk tweeted that “the bird is freed”.
This comes after the billionaire strangely appeared at Twitter’s San Francisco offices on Wednesday carrying a kitchen sink ahead of sealing his $44 billion deal to buy the microblogging site. During his visit, Mr. Musk reportedly informed Twitter employees that he did not want to lay off 75% of the company’s employees, despite news to that effect.
Mr. Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” has blasted Twitter’s management and moderation rules, and both parties had been fighting over the terms of the acquisition, with Mr. Musk accusing Twitter of supplying false information about the company’s user counts, in a bid to get out of buying the company.
On the back of the platform’s new owner, many Twitter users have used the opportunity to tweet racial slurs in ‘celebration’ of Mr. Musk’s takeover, expecting less content monitoring to be implemented.
Musk has also stated that he will lift bans on suspended users, which may include former US President Donald Trump, who was barred following the January 2021 Capitol incident.
Twitter warned at the moment that Mr. Trump could provoke greater violence. Mr. Musk, on the other hand, has called the restriction “foolish”.
Mr. Musk stated earlier this week that he does not want the platform to become an echo chamber for hate and divisiveness. “Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hell-scape, where anything can be said with no consequences!” he tweeted.
