Belfast duo, New Portals, have released the video for their latest song, “Cage”. Radio 1’s Phil Taggart and Huw Stephens have already pushed previous single “Stay Here Tonight”, and “Groove Boy” saw them become The Guardian’s ‘New Band Of The Week’. To catch them live come to the Moira Calling Festival on Saturday, September 10.
“Cage” is definitely a vocal performance, eventually greeted by driving bass and sparse drums. The synths convey drama, a sense that the narrative of the song is a high stakes one. Harmonics ring out about midway and, at this point, it is recognised how much those drums clap. A real head nodder.
The visuals see a man driving his car, kerb crawling, seeking a solicitation totally different from the rest. The only embrace being the clinch of an impassioned dance in the middle of the night at a parking lot. Once the routine is finished, the piece of business, the aforementioned man holds a hand to his face in regret as the ‘prostitute’ walks away.
