Mixing period drama with horror and supernatural is not a base that is widely covered in the cinematic market. Other than Timur Bekmambetov‘s 2012 historical action film flop Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, to which the novel, along with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, was written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies pits the famous Bennet sisters against the Regency era social customs, as in the original novel by Jane Austen, and of course, an outbreak of the undead. The film is to be directed by Burr Steers, who brought us 17 Again, and stars Lily James as Elizabeth, and Sam Riley as love interest Mr Darcy.
In addition, Bella Heathcote and Douglas Booth play romantic couple Jane Bennet and wealthy Mr Bingley. The other sisters Kitty, Mary and Lydia are to be played by Suki Waterhouse, Millie Brady, and Ellie Bamber, respectively. Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith will also make an appearance, in the form of pompous Clergyman Mr Collins.
