New ‘Star Wars’ Series Coming From ‘Game Of Thrones’ Creative Team | Film News

The Star Wars machine will continue chugging along, possibly until the end of time, because Disney has announced a brand new series within the Star Wars universe, which will come from the creative team behind Game Of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

The series won’t have anything directly to do with the Skywalker saga or anything director Rian Johnson is doing in his own trilogy of films, but will give Disney another set of Star Wars films to release on an audience still willing to fervently consume them no matter how many there are.

While it might be exciting for both Thrones fans and Star Wars fans, we’ve seen in the past that producer Kathleen Kennedy is not particularly interested in letting creators colour outside the lines, and seems to want a very by-the-numbers product. Thus it’s hard to know if Benioff and Weiss will be able to truly write anything interesting into the series or not.

In a statement, Kennedy did say: “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting”.

Which is probably not to dissimilar to what was said upon the hiring of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and remember what happened to them when they tried to inject some creativity into the Han Solo spinoff?

So now we play the waiting game as to the details regarding this new series, what characters it will employ and the release date of the first film. Get ready, it seems that soon enough every other big Hollywood release will be a Star Wars film.
