New ‘Venom’ Trailer Shows Off Tom Hardy’s Anti-Hero | Film Trailer

Sony has dropped a brand new Venom trailer, one that actually reveals the title character this time around. After an original trailer that teased the vibe of the film, this second trailer shows off much more of the basic plot and star Tom Hardy‘s interactions with various characters after being infected with the alien symbiote that turns him into Venom.

The plot revolves around Hardy’s Eddie Brock, a reporter investigating a shady organisation trying to use the symbiote for their own personal gain. He comes into contact with it, which obviously proves to have plenty of consequences, as you can see below.

In the comics, Spider-Man comes into contact with the symbiote which gives him powers like increased strength and unlimited web-fluid, while also causing aggression. When Spider-Man gets rid of it, it latches onto Brock, turning him into Venom, who has Spider-Man’s powers while resembling a grotesque version of him.

Since Spider-Man currently resides in the MCU, Sony is moving ahead with a solo Venom film with Brock as the sole protagonist. The trailer above is pretty standard by modern superhero films, but does give us a glimpse at Venom towards the end.

Fans will hope there’s a more substantial plot than the one teased in the trailer, which seems to be about as run-of-the-mill superhero origin story as it gets, but they’ll be confident that this incarnation of the character won’t be the disaster that his appearance in 2007’s Spider-Man 3 was.

The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), and alongside Hardy, stars Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate and Michelle Williams. The film opens Friday, October 5.
