While Nicolas Cage is still piling up the movie credits in order to escape his huge debt, that doesn’t mean all his recent projects are cash grabs. In fact, he’s just signed on for perhaps one of his most intriguing roles, the post-apocalyptic thriller Prisoners Of The Ghostland.

Cage will be playing a notorious criminal simply known as Hero, who is sent to rescue an abducted girl who has disappeared into a supernatural universe. Together, they must break the evil curse that binds them and escape the ghostland, which is described as “an East-meets-West vortex of beauty and violence”.

What makes this role for Cage so intriguing, is that the film will be helmed by infamous Japanese director Sion Sono, in what will be his English language debut. Sono might not be a familiar name in most circles, but cinephiles have been devouring his eccentric and violent Japanese work with glee over the past few decades.

Combining the intriguing supernatural premise of Prisoners Of The Ghostland with the director that gave us the weird four-hour extravaganza Love Exposure or the inventive horror of Suicide Club is a mouth-watering prospect. Add in Cage as the star of the movie, and this becomes one of his most anticipated films of the last decade.

It’s another genre film to add to Cage’s recent roles in films such as Dog Eat Dog and Mom And Dad, but might end up as one of his most famous roles. No more details regarding the film are available at this time.
