Octavia Spencer Reunites With ‘The Help’ Director On Horror-Thriller ‘Ma’ | Film News

Octavia Spencer is set to reunite with The Help director Tate Taylor on Ma, a new film being produced by Blumhouse Productions. Considering this is coming from Blumhouse (Insidious, Get Out, The Purge), it’s no surprise to hear the film is a mix of horror and psychological thriller.

Juliette Lewis and Luke Evans will co-star, and production is set to begin in Mississippi on Monday. There’s very few details regarding the content of the film, but Taylor said: “it’s dark material, but it’s also really fun”, before going on to say of Spencer:

“Octavia is so damn likeable that we usually see her in certain roles. But she’s such a good actress and this is such a complex character that if I do my job right, people in the audience are going to want to push pause and say, ‘Can we please take you out for coffee so you don’t do what you’re about to do'”.

Taylor’s previous film was the underwhelming The Girl On The Train, and despite its Oscar wins, there are plenty who don’t rate The Help too highly either, so it will be interesting to see if he can take the next step and make something truly memorable.

With Spencer on board, having already won an Academy Award and in the running for another this year thanks to her role in The Shape Of Water, and in a role seemingly out of the ordinary for her, there’s certainly plenty of intrigue to Ma, as there are with most Blumhouse films.

Taylor went on to add regarding Spencer’s role: “I wouldn’t call her a villain, [but] it’s definitely the most complex character she’s ever played, if I may be so bold as to say that”. With production beginning on Monday, hopefully we’ll soon uncover some more details regarding the film.
