It was reported in May that a sequel to the 2009 cult hit Zombieland was potentially in the works with the original cast returning. That news was taken with a grain of salt by fans as they had been repeatedly let down in the past when rumours about a sequel would arise. However, this time it’s all true.
THR has confirmed that Zombieland 2 is indeed happening with Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin all returning. Rueben Fleischer is also back to direct from a script penned by original screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
They are reportedly eyeing a January 2019 start date for production with the hope that the film can be released in cinemas in October 2019, just in time for the ten year anniversary of the original movie. As for the plot, THR goes on to say:
“The new movie will once again put the focus on comic mayhem, taking the quartet from the White House to the American heartland as they face off against new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But, most of all, according to the studio, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family”.
While the original film wasn’t a massive hit upon release (making $102 million worldwide), that take looks a lot better when you consider the budget was only $25 million and Eisenberg and Stone were not the big stars they are today. With both now having been Oscar nominated (with Stone winning), there’s a good chance Zombieland 2 can make a bigger splash at the box office.
A comedy sequel after a decade-long gap is perhaps a risky idea, and it’s kind of remarkable the film is even happening considering the career trajectory of all involved, but with all the cogs that made the original work returning, hopefully Zombieland 2 can indeed live up to the hype and be the sequel fans have dreamed about.
