Oscar Isaac & Michelle Williams To Star In HBO Remake Of ‘Scenes From A Marriage’ | TV News

Get ready for six-plus hours of well-acted arguing! Oscar Isaac and Michelle Williams will star in an HBO remake of Ingmar Bergman‘s Scenes From A Marriage.

The original Swedish project starred Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson and aired in six parts, although since then it’s been canonised as one big film by the Criterion Collection, while a shorter theatrical version also exists.

The modern remake will explore many of the same marital themes as the original, this time through the lens of a contemporary American couple. Hagai Levi (The Affair) will write and direct the series, which has reportedly been in the works for several years under the Media Res banner, run by former HBO exec Michael Ellenberg.

Bergman’s film is a classic, all-encompassing look at a fracturing relationship with no shying away from the minutest and most agonising of details. Expect this remake to be pretty similar except with plenty of modern updates. Perhaps the inevitable disagreements will also focus on the political climate and other contemporary issues.

Williams and Isaac are two of the most acclaimed actors of their generation, they don’t really need much introduction. Williams has four Oscar nominations under her belt and is a very good bet to eventually win one, while Isaac has become a major name thanks to Star Wars and actually already has a Golden Globe for a previous HBO project, Show Me A Hero.

Watching them in this remake should be an acting tour de force. Expect plenty more nominations and awards to come their way, and also expect the show to be much discussed, just as Noah Baumbach‘s similarly titled Marriage Story was.
