Pixies are due a new album, to be named Head Carrier. Out Friday, September 30, the new album is their second since reforming in 2013, and their first with new full-time bassist, Paz Lenchantin. Lead single, “Um Chagga Lagga”, potentially propels the band into the listening of an entirely new generation alien to their most lauded works.
“Um Chagga Lagga” opens acoustically, before the distorted guitars take the listener by surprise. It definitely has a no compromises, punk feel to it. It breaks down for the drums to crash, and then the guitars wail, high octane. Some strange vocals make no attempt to be tuneful and, in the popular sense, conventional.
