Rebel Wilson Joins ‘Cats’ Musical | Film News

Rebel Wilson is the latest big name to join the cast of Universal‘s adaptation of the acclaimed, long-running Broadway musical, Cats. She will join a stacked cast that already features Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson and James Corden, and will reportedly play Jennyanydots.

Tom Hooper (Les Miserables, The King’s Speech) is directing the adaptation from a script penned by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot). Cats is currently the fourth longest running Broadway show in history, and is itself an adaptation of sorts, having been based on the T.S. Elliot poetry collection, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

The show tells the story of a tribe of felines known as the Jellicles and the night where they make “the Jellicle choice”, in which they decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The show, written by musical czar Andrew Lloyd Webber, initially burst onto the scene in 1981 and has remained immensely popular ever since.

Following the success of La La Land and the other musicals to follow in its wake, such as The Greatest Showman and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, expect Cats to have a similarly impressive box office run.

Production is scheduled to begin later this year in the UK, and the film currently has a release date of December 20, 2019.
