Rihanna Wins Court Case Against Topshop Over Image Rights | Fashion News

It has recently been ruled in court that Topshop is banned from selling T-shirts with images of Rihanna on them. In 2013, the store released shirts with the singer’s picture without her consent, however the photographer who had copyright to the image authorized Topshop to use the picture for their garments. The case was then ruled as passing off, meaning that Rihanna’s image was being passed off as a business of Topshop. In the United Kingdom, there is no law that allows celebrities to limit or control the use of their image, and so they must rely on laws such as copyright infringement and passing off. This case could encourage other celebrities to also take legal action against retailers who use their images without authorization.
