Susan Sarandon, Cheryl Hines & Christine Baranski To Star In ‘Bad Moms’ Moms’ | Film News

The MCU might be all the rage right now, but look out for the BMCU – the Bad Moms Cinematic Universe. The 2016 comedy film that starred Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn was not expected to make much of a splash, but already spawned a sequel, and now has a spin-off to its name.

In the sequel, A Bad Moms Christmas, the three leading mothers got the unexpected surprise of having their moms turn up, played by Susan Sarandon, Cheryl Hines, and Christine Baranski. STX Films obviously liked what they saw as they’ve commissioned a spin-off confusingly titled Bad Moms’ Moms, and the three actresses will reprise their roles.

STX made the announcement during CinemaCon, with STX Films chief Adam Fogelson calling the movie “a whole new adventure that is attracting all sorts of great talent”. The studio had reportedly toyed with making a Bad Dads film, but that appears to be on hold. There were also reports that a similar premise, but in the form of an unscripted reality series, was in the works at Fox.

But for now, STX is sticking with the medium that has found Bad Moms the most success. The original film was a surprise hit, grossing over $180 million from just a $22 million budget. The holiday-themed sequel made a tick over $130 million from a slightly higher $28 million budget. With those numbers, it’s no surprise the studio is looking for more Bad Moms-related money-making opportunities.

We’ve seen premises stretched very thin in the past when studios have shoehorned sequels. Hopefully that is not the case here. Surandon, Hines, and Baranski were seemingly game for anything in the 2017 film, so expect that to be the case in their new starring roles.
