‘The Accountant 2’ Reportedly In Development With Ben Affleck & Jon Bernthal

A sequel to the 2016 Ben Affleck thriller The Accountant is reportedly in the works. Director Gavin O’Connor has confirmed that he’s closed a deal to helm the sequel that will bring back Affleck and Jon Bernthal.

The director told CinemaBlend that he’d always intended to tell the story of Affleck’s protagonist Chris Wolff as a trilogy, with the focus shifting towards Chris’ relationship with Bernthal’s character.

The sequel has reportedly been prioritized over a follow-up to another Affleck-O’Connor project, The Way Back, which was released last year just as the COVID-19 pandemic was hitting.

“There will not be a Way Back sequel, but we are doing an Accountant sequel,” O’Connor said.

“We’re going to integrate his brother into the story. So there’ll be more screen time for Bernthal in the second one. And then the third movie’s going to be, I call it, ‘Rain Man on steroids.’ The third movie is going to be the two brothers, this odd couple. The third one is going be a buddy picture.”

There’s no additional news on the sequel, but O’Connor confirming that he’s closed a deal to return makes it sound pretty concrete that it will indeed happen. The first film was a sleeper hit, making $155.2 million on a $44 million budget, the rare sort of ‘middle class’ movie that doesn’t usually get made anymore.

O’Connor confirmed that Affleck will return, but didn’t give any additional details. We’ll wait and see whether the sequel is enough of a success that O’Connor gets to complete his Accountant trilogy.
