The Chicks Discuss Performing With Beyonce And Changing Their Name With Apple Music | Music News

US country-pop trio The Chicks sat down with Kelleigh Bannen for a virtual interview that Apple Music released on February 12 as part as their Essentials Radio section.

They talked about some important memories and elements of their careers from the past years such as their performance with Beyonce, the change of their name and much more.

The girl band was formerly known as the Dixie Chicks until the Black Lives Matter movement pointed out that Dixie is a nostalgic nickname for the South with racist connotations. Emily Robison, Natalie Maines and Martie Maguire knew they had to search for a new name.

Maguire told Apple Music, “That needed to happen, and we knew that needed to happen for quite some time” adding that “With George Floyd’s murder and everything that started happening with Black Lives Matter, we were like, ‘Oh my God. We got to do this and do this as soon as possible'”.

She explained that they finally decided to only drop the word after throwing out a bunch of ridiculous names during a management Zoom call. She said, “We had to go through that to come back to, ‘Okay, the most obvious thing is The Chicks'”.

According to Maines, the process of changing the group’s name officially in June 2020 was a great relief for the trio. She confessed, “You didn’t even know you were carrying that weight until it was gone. Then it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re The Chicks? What were we thinking? That’s a way cooler name. What are we so scared of? We’re The Chicks.'”

During the interview, The Chicks also reminisced about their performance with Beyonce for the Lemonade track “Daddy Lessons” track at the CMA Awards in 2016. Maines remembered “Well, she’s the biggest supporter of women, and then Texans. So I mean, we’ve always felt the kinship with her, for sure”.

The Chicks released their long-awaited new album Gaslighter last summer which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
