Universal Set To Release Fictional Musical Using Prince’s Greatest Hits | Film News

Universal has acquired the rights for a Mamma-Mia style musical using the late legend, Prince’s songs. After the Abba inspired movie success earlier this year, it seems a resurgence in musical theatre on the big screen is coming our way. With the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody and the upcoming Mary Poppins film, the original storyline using Prince’s music will surely be in great company.

However, it isn’t all a song and dance. Controversy surrounds the news as the singer’s recent passing in 2016 has triggered some fans to believe that the musical is somewhat distasteful.

Alongside upcoming classic musicals like Disney’s Mary Poppins and The Nutcracker, an uprise in Jukebox Musicals seems to have taken place.

Unlike Prince’s original quasi-biographical film Purple Rain, the musical will offer the same techniques presented to us throughout the Mamma-Mia films, which starred Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried. With this in mind, the story will likely have little to do with Prince himself.

Either way, we’ll probably still watch it, just to hear someone attempt to sing Kiss!
