This week IFC Midnight have released a US trailer for one of the hottest horror-thrillers to hit cinemas this year. Starring Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman, and directed by Jennifer Kent, The Babadook sees character Amelia struggle as she comes to terms with the death of her husband, whilst trying to cope with her ‘out of control’ son Samuel. Amid these difficulties, a mysterious children’s book finds its way onto Samuel’s book shelf and unleashes a new world of terrors for the family.
The trailer begins as mother and son turn the tainted pages of ‘Mister Babadook’ and with every word they read, one cannot help but clutch their entire body in fear of what will happen next. “It’s just a book, it can’t hurt you” Amelia innocently says to her son before the trailer kicks into full gear. Tensions rise and insanity soon starts to take over as Amelia feels the strain of unwanted eyes on her family. The rapid cuts introduce shots of terror and psychosis lying in the eyes of our main character, until finally she covers her face repeating “it isn’t real” as The Babadook makes contact.
This film looks like one of the best psychological horror films this year, packed with suspense and great performances from our two leads, this compelling story will be a great addition to its genre and remind people of what horror films should really be like. Opening in UK theatres on October 24, this film will make for a brilliant Halloween showing!
