Writer Zak Penn Still Working On Expanding The ‘Matrix’ Franchise | Film News

It’s been just over a year since it was reported that Warner Bros. was interested in expanding the Matrix franchise á la how Disney has turned Star Wars into an expanded universe of interconnected films, with a specific focus on prequels and side stories.

Writer Zak Penn was touted as working on a treatment for a new Matrix film, but since then there have been no further updates. Penn is currently doing press for the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Ready Player One, for which he wrote the screenplay, adapted from the Ernest Cline novel. During a recent interview, Penn confirmed that he’s still working on bringing the world of the Matrix back:

“I’ve been working on Matrix right now. Which is in..a phase right now. That’s a franchise I desperately want to see brought back and, I can’t go in to too much detail, but I’ve been harassing Warner Bros. for years to try to get it going again so that’s one thing I’m working on and I’ve been working on a bunch of other things too”.

Penn went on to talk about how the franchise has so many intriguing characters that could have their own films. One idea that was being bounced around last year was the idea of a Morpheus prequel starring Michael B. Jordan. After his prominent role in the record-shattering Black Panther, that’s an idea that probably sounds quite enticing to Warner Bros. about now.

Whether that idea will come to fruition or not we don’t know, but in the current climate of interconnected universes and an abundance of remakes/reboots, it seems like close to a sure thing that eventually a new Matrix film – or a series of them – will arrive.
