Zoë Kravitz & Thomasin McKenzie To Star In Psychological Horror ‘Self-Portrait’

Zoë Kravitz and Thomasin McKenzie have signed on to star in Self-Portrait, a psychological horror film from Mona Fastvold (The World To Come), who will direct from a script she has co-written with Brady Corbet (Vox Lux).

The film is based on Rachel Lyon‘s debut novel Self-Portrait With Boy, and revolves around grieving photographer Lu Rile, who moves to a run-down artists’ warehouse in 1990s Brooklyn where she befriends Katherine, an accomplished painter who lives downstairs.

When Katherine suffers her own tragic loss, Lu unknowingly captures the incident in one of her self-portraits, generating a sublime but horrifying image. Consumed by mutual grief and an intensifying relationship, the women find themselves haunted by a demonic force hellbent on shaking their realities.

Topic Studios are developing the project, while WME Independent will launch international sales at Cannes.

Fastvold and Corbet previously collaborated on Corbet’s three directorial features and his upcoming film Brutalist. Fastvold’s 2020 film The World To Come won the the Queer Lion award for best LGBTQ-themed film at that year’s Venice Film Festival.

She’s also directing several episodes of Apple’s upcoming series The Crowded Room with Tom Holland.

Kravitz recently wrapped production on her directorial debut Pussy Island, which stars Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum and was recently picked up for distribution by MGM. Her most recent acting role was in Matt ReevesThe Batman.

McKenzie is best known for her roles in Jojo Rabbit, Last Night In Soho, and The Power of The Dog.

She currently stars in Australian dark comedy series Totally Completely Fine and will next be seen alongside Anne Hathaway in the film adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh‘s Eileen.

Self-Portrait sounds like a fascinating film in the vein of other psychological horrors like Repulsion, Persona, and Black Swan. Production is slated to begin later this year.
