5 Seconds of Summer drummer Ashton Irwin has announced he will be releasing his first solo album titled Superbloom next month. After dropping fourth album Calm with 5 Seconds of Summer in March, the multi-instrumentalist has announced on his social media the release of a project of his own.
He has also unveiled the first single of the album, called “Skinny Skinny“. The song is about body dysmorphia, and Ashton explains writing it based on a conversation he had with his brother about body image. The clip for the track premiered today, and features a shirtless Ashton, tormented by several images of him distorted by mirrors he’s dancing in front of.
It means a lot to him to explore serious topics in his songs, and the lyrics of his forthcoming album were inspired by childhood, alcoholism and depression. He stated: “I think it’s always important as an artist to have a mission statement, like, ‘Why do you make music? Why do you write the lyrics you write?’”
Talking about his forthcoming album, the singer-songwriter explained: “the album explores my inner philosophies and feelings about the walk of life I have found myself on. […] The overarching narrative is support system, healing, recovery, strength and focus on true self. I felt like I had a lot to write about”.
