Afeni Shakur, mother of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, died on May 2 at the age of 69.
Marin County deputies responded to Shakur’s home in California on Monday night after she suffered a possible cardiac arrest. She was then taken to a local hospital where she died just before 10:30 p.m.
Tupac spoke highly of his mother; in one of his most iconic songs, “Dear Mama”, Tupac detailed his childhood struggles and the respect he had for her. “There’s no way I can pay you back / But the plan is to show you that I understand / You are appreciated”, he rapped.
