“Old School” is the latest track to be lifted from Daphne Guinness‘ critically acclaimed debut album, Optimist In Black. She is sharing a video for it from the aforementioned Tony Visconti-produced album, the latter of whom a collaborator with the late David Bowie.
“Old School” is a dirty rocker, a throwback with a punky and grungy spirit to it. The vocals, despairing and drawling, seem to evoke those two rather subversive genres in particular. The closing parts have a vocal refrain, and also a subsequent one to let the drums breathe.
The video was shot on a single Super 8 camera, perhaps going someway to achieving that grainy, retrospective feel. Symmetry also creates quite a trippy effect, and crumpled foil on walls offering a shiny and glinting backdrop.
