Having recently seen Rogue One, the spin off film that told the story of how the rebels acquired the Death Star plans, and currently working through the epic six film bonanza, I am super psyched to hear this news.
The Great Gods of the Galaxy recently unveiled their title for Episode Eight of the series – The Last Jedi. And what an intriguing title it is.
So who is the Last Jedi? The title has already started attracting a number of theories. Because we only saw the ever so evasive Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in the final moments of Episode Seven, we can widely assume that we will be seeing a lot more of him. And given that he was the only known Jedi in this timeframe, it is pretty safe to presume the title refers to him.
Episode Eight is reportedly set to begin immediately after the events of The Force Awakens. So we can look forward to finding out just what exactly Luke has been up to on his Galaxy holiday. Where has he been? Why did he leave? What happened in the years of his absence? And just what is the connection he has with the new young lady that has stolen the Star Wars fan’s hearts?
Of course, the young outcast Rey (Daisy Ridley), is sure to feature heavily in the next film. There is some speculation that the title may refer to her. She has demonstrated ‘The Force’ after all. And pretty much kicked Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) black clad posterior.
Hopefully we can learn a bit more about where she came from, and to whom she is related, because let’s face it, that’s the only question we want the answer to. Fans have speculated since she burst onto our screen. I’ll admit to wracking my brains, trying to find a solid link, knowing the creators so well that it’s just simply out of the question for her not to be some kind of Skywalker or Solo.
On the other hand, someone who we know to be a Solo has obviously got a bigger story to tell. Yes, I am speaking of the troubled spawn of Han (Harrison Ford) and Leia (Carrie Fisher). Could this be a story of redemption? Is it going to be a story opposite to Vader’s, whereby we see a journey of evil to good?
The poor lad really does seem riddled with self hatred and bitterness, a testament to the tremendous portrayal by Driver. I am eager to see more of his story, and discover just why all these Jedi have a father problem. And seeing as he killed his dear old dad in the last film, we might just get a nice therapy session to reveal all in the new film.
Of course The Last Jedi already has a bittersweet taste to it. The loss of Carrie Fisher was a massive blow to the Star Wars Universe. Belonging to one of the greatest trios ever to grace the earth, her death was mourned by fans everywhere. Rogue One was more poignant to me, because I saw it after her death. So her beautiful cameo was both sweet and painful.
The studio has already said they will not CGI Carrie for future films, which is the right thing to do. Thankfully, she did get to film all her scenes for The Last Jedi, so presumably they will work her exit into this one. Not that they would tell us.
Star Wars is hugely infamous for keeping its secrets, which is a contributing factor to its success. Fans complain about the lack of leaks, but there’s just enough to keep us interested. And look at us when a new title comes out. Ridiculous.
Still. The secrets are safe, like the plot line and the characters, and…well, basically everything. But it’s not a bad thing. It just ensures we’re on the very edge of that springboard when the release date rolls around.
Which coincidentally, is about a year.
Great. Just great.
Star Wars – The Last Jedi is released on December 15, 2017.
