‘Downton Abbey’ Movie To Begin Production In 2018 | Film News

Beloved TV period drama Downton Abbey has finally announced its transition onto the big screen. Fans have long awaited for news of the show’s return and with the announcement of production set to begin in 2018, we can only imagine a positive reaction will ensue.

President at NBC Universal International Studios, Michael Edelstein said, “We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the (cast) together. Because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.” Julian Fellowes continues his writing role.

Downton Abbey follows the lives of aristocrats and their domestic servants in a fictional Yorkshire country estate. Set in the early 20th century, British history plays a significant role in the series, as do themes of social class and gender.

During its run, the show was a big success, netting both a BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries, as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film. Dame Maggie Smith was commended for her role as Violet Crawley on the show, earning a Golden Globe Award and two Emmy Awards. She had previously announced that season six would be her last so her involvement in the movie is doubtful.

The series lasted five years, originally airing in the UK between September 2010 to its conclusive season six finale on December 25, 2015. A few more years won’t hurt us.
