Christopher McQuarrie is jumping straight onto another project by signing on to direct The Chameleon for Netflix, an adaptation of Davis Grann‘s 2008 New Yorker feature of the same name, detailing the story of serial impersonator and con man Frédéric Bourdin.
It seems the film has become a couples retreat for some; McQuarrie is joined by wife Heather McQuarrie to produce, whilst Oscar-nominated writer Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street) is joined by wife Rachel Winter to also produce. Unrelated Carl Capotorto (The Sopranos) co-writes.
Frédéric Bourdin was a French con man who impersonated missing teenagers, spanning from the mid-1990s until his arrest in 2005; he was caught out after an eagle eyed administrator spotted him on a television program while he was posing as an orphaned 15 year old at a high school. Bourdin had housed himself in a number of homes, shelters, and schools over the years and in countries all over Europe.
The film will, thus, take on a more thrilling Catch Me If You Can vibe, striking for its reality and possibility.
The project is in good hands under Christopher McQuarrie, an avid writer and fairly upcoming director, but nonetheless an irreplaceable talent in Hollywood. McQuarrie is currently filming the latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, set for a July 27, 2018 release in the US.
