On Monday night, Kristen Stewart took advantage of the Cannes Film Festival to make a bold fashion statement. After striking a pose for the photographers at the premiere of Spike Lee‘s Blackkklansman, she took her Louboutin stilettos off and climbed the staircase barefoot.
This rebellious move is said to be a protest against the infamous red carpet’s heels-only policy for women. In the past, the rule caused some women to be excluded from France’s most fashionable film event, simply because they were wearing shoes with low heels.
In 2016, Stewart spoke out against this controversial rule to a Marie Claire reporter, pointing out that the festival’s policy on women’s attire was sexist:
“Things have to change immediately. It has become really obvious that if [a man and I] were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, ‘Excuse me, young lady, you’re not wearing heels. You cannot come in.’ Then [I’m going to say], ‘Neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?’ It can work both ways. It’s just like you simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him. I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version —flats or heels.”
