Very Ralph is the upcoming documentary made for HBO, which will cover the impressive life and career of fashion designer Ralph Lauren, from his beginnings to the creation and success of his iconic fashion house.
It’s produced and directed by Susan Lacy, the award-winning documentarian who helmed American Masters and recent biopics on Jane Fonda and Steven Spielberg.
“It’s not easy having someone write about you, or seeing a film about you” Lauren admits. Indeed, he turned away many documentary projects about him. But he said he trust Susan Lacy and was impressed by her when they first met. And after three years in the making, when she finally showed him the final film, he said to her, in a very emotional way, “I could never have done this“.
Ralph Lauren has built a multi-million dollar powerhouse on his own. He’s the man of the first times: first to create a complete lifestyle brand, first to introduce diversity on the runway and in advertising, first to create an immersive retail environnement. He is now, by his fashion house, the reference for American fashion.
In the documentary, he explains his pioneering vision and gives insights into some of the most important moments in his life, from his childhood to his five-decade long marriage, though the early days of his company and his first response to critics.
The documentary also includes testimonials from colleagues including Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, André Leon Talley, Hillary Clinton, Robin Givhan, Jason Wu, Naomi Campbell, Martha Stewart, Calvin Klein, Tyson Beckford, Tina Brown, Diane von Furstenberg, Jessica Chastain, Vanessa Friedman and Paul Goldberger.
Finally, it features archives from 50 years of the fashion brand.
Very Ralph premieres on November 12 exclusively on HBO and its affiliated platforms.
