A.J. Edwards is most notable for being Terrence Malick’s long time protégé, and after working on many titles with the critically acclaimed director, including Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life, Edwards is now making his directorial debut. This week Amplify has released an intriguing new trailer for his film The Better Angels, and as you will see, there is no doubt of Malick’s influence on the project.
Based on a 19th century interview with Abraham Lincoln’s family, The Better Angels seeks to chronicle the future president’s (Braydon Denney) childhood, and offers a great insight to the people who shaped his life. The beautiful trailer opens with stunning black and white cinematography as the camera explores the Indiana woodland. From the sweeping shots right through to the glorious music and narration, it is very reminiscent of Malick’s visual style.
Starring Brit Marling, Jason Clarke, Diane Kruger and Wes Bentley, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year to mixed reviews. Despite this, I believe Malick fans will really appreciate this film. Just from watching the trailer, you can see the film offers a rather haunting and visceral testimony of Lincoln’s childhood, and there is no doubt it will contain some wonderfully dramatic performances. The film will receive a limited release on November 7, 2014.
