After gaining almost $600 million on a budget of $150 million, it was pretty evident that Warner Bros. would be eager to create a prequel or sequel to 2007’s I Am Legend starring Will Smith, and based on Richard Matheson’s novel of the same name. Despite their efforts, it’s only now seven years after its release that Warner Bros. are finally getting the ball rolling on the project.
Instead of their initial ideas for the zombie apocalyptic come back, they have now decided to make a straight up reboot of the film. Reports suggest they are adapting Gary Graham’s script A Garden at the End of the World. Although originally a sci-fi take on John Ford’s classic The Searchers, it shares similar themes with I Am Legend which will be adapted accordingly.
Seeing as though zombie-esque films are all the rage right now, it is no wonder Warner Bros. are so keen to get the project off the ground. However, one could argue that this feature might be just the thing to tire out the genre. Take for example The Twilight Saga which resulted in an overbearing fetish for vampire films and TV shows everywhere, until of course audiences grew discontented by the pale blood eaters.
Then there is the most obvious concern of all; is it not far too soon to reboot I Am Legend? Although Matheson’s novel is a great literary piece to convert into cinema, it has been adapted many times before. Firstly it was made into The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price, then The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston and finally I Am Legend. To be quite honest, I feel this reboot is completely pointless and the only thing it will satisfy is the money going into Warner Bros. pocket.
