Welsh soul artist Nia Wyn has just dropped her latest single “What Did You Expect”. The single was produced by and mixed by Shuko and it is the follow-up to Nia’s EP entitled Take A Seat, which was released in March.
The EP received a lot of support from BBC Radio 1, Spotify’s New Music Friday and Clash Magazine to only name a few of them, and once you’ve listened to it it’s easy to understand why.
Nia is a refreshing talent who is taking her inspiration from an eclectic range of artists – soul and jazz legends Billie Holiday and Marvin Gaye but also hip-hop and R&B stars Nas and Lauryn Hill.
“What Did You Expect” is an irresistible slice of Nia’s contemporary soul with her storytelling accompanied by a bouncy beat and jazz/soul piano line. In the single, her lyrics retrace her process through the end of a friendship. Nia herself explained: “I wrote this song about a friendship that broke down… it’s been years and has taken time to process the sense of loss and disappointment I was feeling.”
Nia Wyn grew up in North Wales and found some comfort in old blues and soul records she could find in junk shops. She drew her inspiration from here to crafts songs about her personal experience capturing something vivid and compelling. She is definitely an emerging artist we should watch in the time to come.
