Houston-based Aesja has released her new EP Gold which has four songs. Particularly on her most recent EP, Aesja exhorts listeners to follow their instincts. She demonstrates in this project how to act in your best interests no matter the situation. The four songs on the Gold EP stand for discovering light in the shadows.
“Some of the greatest growth of every being happens in the dark: embryos are developed into babies in a dark womb, seeds sprout into plants in darkness, diamonds and gold are both created with immense pressure and darkness,” Aesja says.
“I started making this during one of the darkest times of my life when I couldn’t see my worth. I had to trust that I could persevere to get to a place where I knew my worth and was happy even though I couldn’t see it then. I had to excavate myself to see my true value.”
Gold explores intricate R&B variations with vintage samples, trap arrangements, and other luxurious elements. Her vocal range is comparable to songstresses like thuy.
“Right Back” and “Had Your Fun” are more of a warning to a potential love interest who isn’t a good mate. Aesja calls him out for their betrayal and other awful actions and concludes that it’s best to keep her away.
The song “What Are You Really Ready For?” helps a potential partner get ready for dating Aesja. She asks them essential questions to determine whether they are suitable to be her better half.
She says out loud that their connection must go beyond the bedroom and then asks “Will you put in the effort necessary to advance? Are you ready to experience discomfort? Are you ready to put in the effort to get it?”
“NY Vibe” examines the cutthroat society into which we have devolved. Those who are merely gratifying their emotional needs selfishly are left behind by LIL JSEAN and Aesja. They have done everything they could to save these relationships and move forward with integrity.
As far as what she wants audiences to take away from this project, Aesja wants her listeners to know: “There are more than a few things I hope fans take away from this project! I hope that fans take away that it’s okay to be authentically yourself, even if you’re different from everyone else; that we are all allowed to make mistakes, learn and grow; that having boundaries and honoring them is necessary and healthy.”
