Brooklyn-based band, Endearments, is set to take their listeners on an emotional journey with their new single, “Selfish.”
With a hint of ’80s indie rock flair, the song delves into the complexities of new love, capturing the delicate moments before the utterance of those three sacred words – “I love you.” The lyrics touch upon the intersection of excitement and vulnerability, while exploring the shadows of past relationships that still linger.
The band’s signature sound can be attributed to the dynamic interplay between its members. Drummer Will Haywood Smith lays down a consistent rhythm, perfectly complementing the captivating guitar leads of Anjali Nair.
The track gains momentum, building to a poignant bridge, only to cascade into a soul-stirring gust of distorted guitar. Culminating in a falsetto-laden chorus, “Selfish” exemplifies Endearments’ knack for blending raw emotion with refined musicality.
Kevin Marksson, the band’s frontman and songwriter, is no stranger to wearing his emotions openly. Over the past three years, his diary entries have metamorphosed into the evocative songs that form the band’s discography.
This upcoming EP, It Can Be Like This, promises to be a rich tapestry of introspective tracks reminiscent of early 4AD dream pop and the unmistakable romantic vibes of Roxy Music.
While previous singles such as “Left Side” and “Anica” gave listeners a glimpse into themes of heartbreak and healing, the EP promises a deeper dive into these emotions.
Their collaboration with producer Abe Seiferth has birthed songs that elegantly merge the ethereal guitar tones found in The Passions’ Thirty Thousand Feet Over China with the catchy allure of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic tracks.
The EP’s lead, “Hazy Eyes,” is a testament to this harmonious blend, showcasing crystalline synths and agile basslines dancing alongside Nair’s mesmerizing guitar and Marksson’s evocative voice.
Anticipation builds as It Can Be Like This gears up for its digital and limited-edition vinyl release on November 3. Fans of nostalgic indie rock are in for a treat as Endearments further cements their place in the contemporary music landscape.
