Maudlin Strangers, an indie rock band known for their eclectic sound and compelling storytelling, has released the official music video for their latest single, “Under My Skin.” The track serves as a showcase for their unique ability to fuse bouncing indie rock beats with lead singer Jake Hays’ crooning vocals, reminiscent of the stylistic prowess of UK rock bands such as Arctic Monkeys.
The video, directed and edited by Hays himself, embodies an intriguing visual concept that nods to the iconic black-and-white broadcasts of The Ed Sullivan Show with a twist of The Twilight Zone’s unsettling atmosphere. This homage is further intensified by a touch of Joker-esque theatricality.
In explaining his vision, Hays stated, “I had the idea that I wanted to show the band on an old late-night TV show. Though instead of a wholesome performance, I wanted there to be an eerie edge. The song is about knowing you’re in a toxic relationship and accepting your part in it, yet choosing to stay, so wearing clown makeup felt appropriate to depict that meaning.”
This distinctive approach highlights Hays’ penchant for combining retro aesthetics with a dark, modern twist. He noted, “I’ve been a big fan of the juxtaposition of 1950s aesthetics with an unsettling edge to it, which is a style you’ll see show up in almost all of the new Maudlin Strangers artwork. It’s something I’ve been drawn to for a long time, so it feels right to place the story of the band within this created retro-future time period.”
Maudlin Strangers originated as Hays’ solo indie rock project in 2010, growing organically from his musical experimentation. Following a series of independent releases, the project gained momentum, leading to a signing with BMG/Vagrant Records. Their debut label release, the “Overdose” EP in 2015, established their presence in the indie scene and secured tour opportunities with notable acts like Bad Suns and LANY, culminating in a tour supporting Cold War Kids across North America.
Despite the promising rise, Maudlin Strangers went on hiatus in 2016 as Hays pivoted toward producing and acting. Fast forward to 2023, the band’s return was met with excitement as they re-emerged with a fresh lineup composed of close friends, including original member Richie Gonzales (drums), Alexander “Schmorgle” Morgan (guitar/keys), and Drew Bruchs (bass).
The comeback included a sold-out reunion show in Los Angeles and a series of single releases throughout 2024, signaling that the group is ready to reclaim its place in the indie rock landscape.
“Under My Skin” encapsulates Maudlin Strangers’ evolved sound—a blend of nostalgia and modern grit—while illustrating the band’s continued dedication to storytelling through layered melodies and evocative visuals. The track and its accompanying video serve as a testament to their growth and resilience, marking a thrilling new chapter for the band.
