“Hangover“, the latest single by singer-songwriter Mary-Cait “MC” Hentz, known professionally as dalloway, is a raw and introspective take on the irresistible pull of bad decisions. It’s about the paradox of longing—getting back together with someone you know is a terrible idea, yet hoping against all odds that this time, things will be different.
It’s the story of reconciling with a person who once broke your heart because, maybe, the second time around will undo the mistakes of the past and be somewhat different.
Inspired by her favourite novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, MC infuses her music with literary depth and nuance. Much like Woolf’s masterpiece, Hangover delves into themes of mental health, queerness, and the delicate connections that bind us to one another.
With haunting melodies and lyrics that show vulnerability, the track captures the tension between hope and foreboding, longing and unease.
Hangover leans into an eerie, unsettling atmosphere which is made to mirror the unease of a relationship where vulnerability feels like a gamble. From the ghostly “la la la” Certainly!
Backing vocals, reminiscent of a ghostly Victorian child, merge with a distorted instrumentation.
Hailing from the woods of Dover, MA, just outside of Boston, for over a decade MC has called Los Angeles home. Her journey to becoming dalloway is an indication to her resilience and passion. While music has always been a part of her life—from school musicals to voice lessons to collegiate a cappella—her solo career only truly began with the release of phases and its subsequent EP in 2022.
Hangover marks the 10th song in her discography and more singles slated for early 2025, MC continues to refine her sound, balancing the two genres, indie folk and alt-electro pop. For her, this experimentation reflects her ADHD-driven love of variety: “I like too many things. Choosing a singular sound has been both challenging and incredibly difficult.”
