Brisbane Duo Shugorei Unleash New Single ‘Roboto’

Dynamic duo Shugorei unveil their electrifying new release “Roboto,” blending together elements of etherealism and fantasy into lush, immersive words.

“Roboto” is a sneak-peak into Shugorei’s forthcoming album Memories of Magic, which weaves together inspirations from electronica and intricate percussion, all enriched by a cast of breathtaking classical musicians, forming an vivid immersive experience for their listeners. The journey of this song is rooted in a magical tale of their interaction with an enigmatic encounter with a silver robot.

The track combines moments of pure retro-futuristic charm and subtle synth-soaked retro pop into the perfect sonic recipe. Noz’s vocals, delivered in her Japanese mother tongue, root the song in deep feelings of nostalgia, allowing the music to rest into its most foundational traits. Guest artist Dan Curro, a cellist, adds extra flare to the track with slap bass and gives it just the right amount of charm.

Shugorei, meaning guardian spirit and unified in 2019, consists of Nozomi Omote and Thomas Green. Noz brings in her Japanese background and Tom, his Western musicianship, makes for the perfect balance and delivery of magnetic music

The duo release their music via Meanjin boutique label 4000 Records. Their debut, self-titled album was released on March 4th, 2021, followed by the stand-alone single “Meet The Sun” featuring vocalist Shêm Allen in 2023.

In 2024 Shugorei collaborated with The Australian School of Kung Fu and Tai Chi, to draw out latent musical rhythms in Chinese Kung fu forms. The music was performed live by Black Square String Quartet, electronics and percussion. A studio-recorded soundtrack of the performance is presented as the album, The Sounds of Chow Gar.
